I have a daughter, Olivia, currently a seventh grade student at Jackson. In the fall of 2010 my son Aidan will be an entering sixth grade student from Markham Elementary School. As a former Site Council Member of Markham School, I understand the commitment necessary to fulfill these responsibilities and am eager to take part in this process once again.

The following is a brief summary of some of my relevant background:

  • 3 years on Markham Site Council requiring development of three School Improvement Plans. One year as Chair.
  • Member of the Principal Hiring Committee at Markham.
  • 9 years as a supervisor at Multnomah Education Service District, Department of School Health Services. My job entailed collaboration with School District policy makers and the day-to-day operations of schools including budget issues.
  • Community Advisor and/or member for; Healthy Kids Learn Better, Healthy Communities, Leaders Roundtable (a school community network), Mayor’s Gang Meeting, and School Attendance Initiative among others.
  • Designed and Implemented with community team members, the School Insurance Health Initiative project, bringing health care insurance coverage to “uninsurable” students in Multnomah County.

I am currently a part time Registered Nurse for Legacy Health Systems and a full time mom. I have a strong interest in cultural diversity and promoting effective communication between schools and families. Site council is the place to work in a team to achieve the highest quality of learning for our kids. Serving our students and schools would be a great privilege and challenge in these complicated times. Thanks for your consideration.

I am interested in participating in the Jackson Site Council in order to serve the community and my children by maintaining and improving the learning environment at Jackson School.  I have 3 children; Gabe age 12 in 6th grade at Jackson, Galen age 11 in 5th grade at Stephenson, and Evelyn age 10 in 4th grade at Stephenson. My children have attended Stephenson School for their entire elementary education where I have been able to participate in a school with exceptional parent support. I have participated in their classrooms with occasional didactic lectures and I was involved in the process of selecting our current principle. The vast majority of my community service time is in the form of coaching soccer for 5 years.

My overarching goal in site council would be to foster the successful models already in place and facilitate improvements that serve to make Jackson students engaged and enthusiastic about the process of learning. I believe that excellent teachers should have the tools they need and an environment that allows them creative license to meet student needs. I hope to be part of the process that unites parents and teachers in the shared goal of developing our community and helping our children reach their potential.

Thank you for considering my application to the Jackson Site Council.
